(2023 revision):
Trombone Shorty collaborations with Atlanta guitarist and songwriter David Ryan Harris - on the 2011 song “The Craziest Thing” from the album For True and 2013’s “You and I (Outta This Place)” from Say That To Say This - built upon Shorty’s signature supafunkrock sound by incorporating the funk rock influence of Harris’ group, Follow For Now - the Black rock band that inherited the Afro-punk traditions of bands like Living Colour, Fishbone, and Bad Brains who pushed back against MTV’s whitewashing of mainstream rock music.
The Atlanta band’s debut album, Follow For Now, received critical acclaim when it was released in 1991, exactly two weeks prior to Nirvana’s Nevermind and MTV’s ensuing affair with the Pacific Northwest. As cable television moved on from urban to suburban markets, it can only be imagined the cultural impact bands like Follow For Now could have made if grunge had not become the fashion. Harris eventually established himself as a sought-after solo artist, collaborator and, for Trombone Shorty, a doorway into the Atlanta-based jam rock scene.
