Everyone should have a theme song.  The most effective theme songs are capable of summarizing an elaborate backstory within a catchy and memorable tune.  Every character has a story to tell, and when told through poetry that highlights the defining chapters and a captivating performance, theme songs become an essential tool for communication.

In his book Roll With It, Matt Sakakeeny demonstrates how the music of New Orleans brass bands serves as a vehicle of communication, expression, and representation of the life and culture in the neighborhoods throughout the city.  Citizens respond to the rhythms as a call to action while the lyrics and chants relay information regarding threats of violence and danger to the community, either in protest or in celebration of the struggle over adversity. Through repetition, these musical themes elevate to become anthems and evoke a shared sense of pride within the community.
